Leo D. Sugg Jr. ‘88

LEO DANIEL SUGG JR, 58, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, after a lifetime filled with love, dedication, and quiet strength. A devoted husband, father, son, brother, and uncle, Leo's presence brought kindness and grace to everyone who knew him.

Born in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania, Leo was a proud native of the state. He graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Shamokin before continuing his education at Penn State University, where he earned a degree in accounting and developed a lifelong passion for Nittany Lions football. He was also a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, where he built friendships and honed leadership skills that would serve him well throughout his life.

Leo Sugg Jr.

Leo’s accounting career began at Ernst & Young, and he soon expanded his expertise, earning an MBA from NYU Stern School of Business. He enjoyed a 30-year career in the insurance industry, most recently serving as Senior Vice President, North America Accident & Health and Head of Internal Management Consulting at Starr Insurance Companies in New York City. His career often took him overseas, with frequent travel to Europe and Asia, and even a period living with his family in Tokyo, Japan—an experience that greatly
enriched his cultural perspective.

Leo’s personal life was defined by his love and devotion to his family. He married the love of his life, Gwynne Bruce, with whom he shared 23 joyful years. Together, they raised their three boys, sons Chris and Winston, and stepson Will Barrett. He introduced Gwynne to college football, and together they spent many weekends cheering on Penn State, both at tailgates and from their home. Leo’s love for his family extended to his community as well, where he volunteered as a youth soccer coach and was always his sons' biggest fan at their Rumson-Fair Haven games.

A man of deep faith, Leo was an active member of Holy Cross Church in Rumson, where he served as a lector and a leader of the men’s group, including providing the highly anticipated donuts and coffee each week. He was also a 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus, contributing his time and energy to charitable efforts.

In his personal time, Leo, a fan of politics and all sports, was most passionate about cooking and delighted in preparing delicious meals for his family and friends. Whether hosting a grand holiday feast or experimenting with new recipes inspired by his travels, Leo’s culinary skills brought people together and created lasting memories around the dinner table.

Leo was predeceased by his parents, Leo Daniel Sugg Sr. and Frances Mary Adams Sugg, and his infant brother, Christopher. He is survived by his wife, Gwynne; sons Christopher and Winston; stepson William Barrett; sisters Patrice Cavanaugh, Fran Biddiscombe (Don), and Kate Miller (Eric); a large extended family of in-laws, aunts, uncles,12 nieces and nephews, and many adored cousins.

Visitation will be held at Thompson Memorial Home in Red Bank, NJ, on September 13th from 5 to 8 pm and a Requiem Mass at Holy Cross Church in Rumson will be held on September 14th at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Four Diamonds, an organization conquering childhood cancer.
