Members from the four greek councils were dressed to impress and received awards of all sizes, but none of them were gold Oscar statues, at the 12th annual Greek Oscars, held last night at the Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.

Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life Kevin Kerr said there were many successes and accomplishments in the past year, and last night was about remembering and rewarding those accomplishments. "Way to stand proud, Penn State greeks," Kerr said to the crowd of about 200.

Four chapters received the Chapter Academic Achievement Award for having the highest grade point average from the spring and fall 2005 semesters: Theta Chi fraternity, 523 S. Allen St., Chi Omega sorority, Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and Delta Sigma Iota fraternity.

Alpha Phi Alpha President Alex Thomas said it was an honor for his fraternity to receive the award because the emphasis on its scholarship principle is important. "It is a testament that the brothers achieved so much this year," he said.

The Greek Pride award continued its tradition of awarding those members who started new initiatives, strengthened the old methods and served as role models in the greek community, Panhellenic Council Adviser Jane Neitz said.

Former Panhellenic Vice President of Standards Kaitlin Swymer was one of the six recipients of the award for her accomplishments in the Panhellenic Council. "I worked very hard the past four years, and I am leaving in three weeks, so it is good to get the recognition," Swymer said.

The infamous Greek Man and Woman of the Year awards were presented to former National Pan-Hellenic Council Executive Vice President Randy Winder and former Panhellenic President Colleen Briley.

"This was a capstone to everything," Briley said.

Winder said he was surprised to receive the award because there was fierce competition for it.

"It's been a long four years, but I feel good," Winder said.
