George W. Herring ‘67 - Dec. 8, 2024
George W. Herring, Jr., 80, of Sandy Springs, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 8, 2024, after a long illness. He was the beloved son of the late Col. George W. Herring, Sr., USMC (Ret.) and Elizabeth M. Herring. He graduated from Hammond High School in Alexandria, Virginia in 1963 and continued on to Penn State University, where he was a proud member of Theta Chi Fraternity, graduating in 1967. After receiving his MBA in 1969 from Georgia State University, he joined C&S Bank in Atlanta, where he would meet his future wife of 51 years, Cheryl. He will be remembered as a thoughtful and unpretentious man known for his intelligence, gentle humor, and deep commitment to his family. George was predeceased by his sister, Elisabeth Herring Colquhoun. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Cheryl Settle Herring; his daughters, Christy Herring Fretwell (Chris), Jenny Herring Lee (Robert); grandson, Jackson Fretwell; sister, Margaret Herring Keogh; and six nieces and nephews. The family will hold a memorial service to celebrate George's life on Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at Northside Chapel, 12050 Crabapple Road, Roswell, Georgia 30075.
