Onward State - Kids Spark BJC at “THON’s Fireworks” Variety Show
So what exactly did the Family Variety Show “THON’s Fireworks” have to offer? In a word: energy. With kids showing their skills, from juggling, to dancing, to singing, to reciting digits of pi, the children that make up the Four Diamonds families wowed the BJC with their various skills.
The show began with the oh-so-charming Dylan Moser who gave his rendition of “Party Rock Anthem” in his Blue DT/DZ tank top and clear shades. The entire crowd’s enthusiastic cheers turned into downright screams by the time the first chorus came around–the loudest the BJC has been since dancers first stood up. He ended the stellar performance with a “Thank you, JoePa” and a “We Are” chant, which the entire crowd participated in.
AJ, Alexis, and Annabelle Bobby along with the Theta Chi brothers, sang and danced to LMFAO’s “Sexy and I Know It”, which featured one Theta Chi brother dressed as a penguin. Their act ended with a “We Are” chant as well. Following the Bobbys, the duo of Kimberly and Hannah Hess sang “Hit the Lights” in a matching black dress ensemble.
Tyler Vicidomini provided a change of pace, wowing the BJC with his ability to not only juggle at least 3 balls at a time (between his legs!), but rings and pins as well! And performing his routine to the theme from “Mortal Kombat” was a nice touch.
Andrew Wood sang Justin Bieber’s “Baby” with the help of his older sister Moriah, all while rocking a tiny white muscle tank and jeans. At one point, Andrew ran to the very edge of the stage, giving off the impression that he was about to jump right into the crowd. He ended his adorable show with an FTK chant.
Next up were Katie Rose and Bethany Johnson, who put on an acoustic version of “Believe in Dreams” by Flyleaf to calm down the masses. Then Bryan Weinsheimer began his performance by hula hooping to “Stereo Hearts”, but his act didn’t end there: he managed to take off 2 shirts while hula hooping, revealing the FTK painted on his chest and the Four Diamonds logo on his back. He then proceeded to hula hoop three hoops at a time. Talk about talent!
Natasha and Dominique Bigler and Woman’s Chorale sang the THON classic “Livin’ On A Prayer” whilst holding a huge inflatable monkey and had the entire Bryce Jordan Center singing along with Bon Jovi’s chorus. After that, sisters Stephanie, Rebecca and Amanda Allen serenaded their audience with “Billionaire” by Travie McCoy.
Following the Allen sisters came a few change-ups. Ashley, with the help of a few Lionettes, twirled her baton to Selena Gomez’s song “Naturally” in her sparkly, hot pink tutu. And Keegan Carter’s talent involved reciting digits of pi. Various Greek organizations held up their “Pi” signs as he rattled off the numbers.
It was back to the singing, with Katie and Maggie Patterson singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” with a keyboard accompaniment, a performance dedicated to the memory of Joe Paterno. When they finished, their brother Jack played the theme to Harry Potter on the keyboard.
Sydney and Katie Bush closed out the show by performing the classic Queen songs “We Will Rock You” and “We Are The Champions” but replaced the choruses with “We Are, We Are Penn State” and “We Are The Dancers”, respectively.
There will be another kids variety show on Sunday morning. With the amazing acts that were seen tonight, the participants in tomorrow’s show will have a lot to live up to. Yet, something tells me that the second set of performers will rise to the challenge and set the BJC roof on fire with their various talents!
