Byrne RemphreyBrother Byrne Remphrey, a member of our Omega Chapter at Pennsylvania State University, recently found himself and others in quite a predicament. While visiting a buddy's apartment, Byrne noticed a fire on a neighbor's deck which was spreading rapidly. He and his friends quickly responded, knocking on doors and pulling fire alarms within the building. The flames, which turned into a three-alarm fire, took no lives because these gentlemen managed to evacuate all 24 apartments in the building and notify the fire department. The entire third floor of the apartment building was destroyed, while the two floors below and the attic of the building next door were heavily damaged. "The hire floor was just one big open room with no roof. That;s all there was to it," said Remphrey, following the blaze. The fire began at the apartment next door, in a charcoal grill that apparently has not been completely doused. The blaze drew onlookers from all around the area, and Byrne received recognition for his heroic efforts from Congressman Curt Weldon who also serves as Co-Chairman of the Congressional Fire Services Click to see larger versionCaucus. On June 10, 1997, Brother Remphrey was presented a Recognition Award on behalf of the congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI), a non-profit, educational organization which works to educate Congress on issues of concern to fire and rescue personnel across the country. CFSI Executive Director Bill Webb spoke on the award: "The men and women of the American fire services are the unsung heroes of our country. Byrne Remphrey;s dedication to his community is an example to us all."
