Omega Brother Updates - The Rattle, Spring 1945

A battlefield promotion to captain and the Bronze Star were awarded to John M. Metzger, Penn State, '39, for meritorious achievement and service in action in France. Belgium. Holland and Germany. He had been overseas about 15 months, going over as a first lieutenant in the field artillery. Recently he has been reported as missing in action. He in the non of Fritz L. Metzger, Norwich, '03.

Capt. S. Bruce Gilliard, Penn State, ‘35, died in action, November 7, 1944, in the Metz area. He was with the: 3rd Army and at first was reported missing in action. Captain Gilliard before entering the U.S. Army was deputy regional counselor of Region 3.
Omega Chapter Brothers have also has some pleasant meetings in recent months. Lt (jg) Paul S. Handwerk, who is still plying between England and the continent in an LST boat, discovered one of the two soldiers aboard on invitation of the commanding officer for steak sandwiches to be Major Albert Kohn.
Lt. J. Bruce Brooks, ex '44
Holder of the Air Medal with one silver cluster and two bronze clusters and wearer of three campaign stars, Lt. J. Bruce: Brooks, ex-’44, was attending Pennsylvania State College when he enlisted in the Army Air Forces shortly after Pearl Harbor. Trained at various fields in California, he was graduated from Luke Field, Ariz,, January 4, 1943, as a fighter pilot and left for overseas the following month. He saw service in Hawaii, New Caledonia, New Hebrides, and the Solomon Islands, attached to the “Fighting 13th” Air Force. Assigned to the Sarasota, Army Air Base after his leave last July, he is acting gunnery officer and instructing in a battle tactics in Mustang fighters.
